A short history
The Berlin Marathon was first run in 1974 and is one of the World Marathon Majors. It's the fastest of them: flat, cool in late September, and the course where the men's marathon world record has been broken again and again.
The course starts on the Straße des 17. Juni in the Tiergarten, runs past the Victory Column, and makes one big loop of the city: north through Moabit, east through Mitte to Alexanderplatz and down Karl-Marx-Allee, south through Kreuzberg and Neukölln, west through Schöneberg, Friedenau and Wilmersdorf, then back along the Kurfürstendamm, past Potsdamer Platz and Gendarmenmarkt, down Unter den Linden and through the Brandenburg Gate to the finish.
About this GPX
This file follows the race organisers' own course line (their measured "ideal line" from the official course map).
- 1,501 waypoints, each with elevation from EU-DEM 25 m terrain data, smoothed so tunnels and bridges don't read as hills
- Total distance: about 42.25 km; SummitRoom runs it as the certified 42.195 km
- Climbing: about +61 m over the whole course, with nothing steeper than 1%
Direction: a loop. Tiergarten → Moabit → Mitte → Friedrichshain → Kreuzberg → Neukölln → Schöneberg → Friedenau → Wilmersdorf → Kurfürstendamm → Potsdamer Platz → Unter den Linden → Brandenburg Gate.
Treadmill simulation notes
Berlin barely moves the incline, which is why people run it for a time. It's a good course for a long run at goal marathon pace, or a progression run where the only thing changing is you.
