A short history
The London Marathon was first run in 1981 and is one of the World Marathon Majors, and the largest annual fundraising event in the world. It's the race of the crowds: the whole route is lined, and the noise on Tower Bridge at halfway is famous.
From the red start on Blackheath the course drops through Charlton and Woolwich, swings back west past the Cutty Sark in Greenwich and along the river through Deptford, Surrey Quays and Rotherhithe, then turns north over Tower Bridge. The second half heads east along The Highway to Limehouse, loops the Isle of Dogs and Canary Wharf, and comes back west along The Highway, past the Tower of London, down the Embankment to Big Ben, along Birdcage Walk past Buckingham Palace and onto The Mall.
About this GPX
This file follows the course as mapped in OpenStreetMap by its contributors (relation 2086183, the red start), with the stretches that were listed out of running order put back in order.
- 1,501 waypoints, each with elevation from EU-DEM 25 m terrain data, smoothed so the river bridges and underpasses don't read as dips
- Total distance: the trace follows road centrelines and measures about 42.8 km; SummitRoom runs it as the certified 42.195 km
- Climbing: about +84 m and −118 m; the steepest part is the drop off Blackheath in the first 5 km
Direction: point to point. Blackheath → Woolwich → Greenwich → Rotherhithe → Tower Bridge → Limehouse → Isle of Dogs → Canary Wharf → The Highway → Embankment → The Mall.

Treadmill simulation notes
London starts with its only real hills: a gentle downhill off Blackheath that's easy to run too fast. After that it's flat enough for a steady marathon-pace session, with the short rise onto Tower Bridge and the little ups and downs of the Isle of Dogs to keep the incline moving.
