A short history
The Sydney Marathon grew out of the 2000 Olympic marathon and became the seventh World Marathon Major in 2025. It's the hilliest of the Majors, and it has the best start and finish of any of them: over the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the first few kilometres, and home at the Sydney Opera House.
The course starts on Miller Street in North Sydney and crosses the Harbour Bridge on closed roads, then runs through the city and out to Pyrmont, down Anzac Parade, around Centennial Park, and back through the city to the Royal Botanic Garden and Mrs Macquarie's Chair, finishing on the Opera House forecourt.
About this GPX
This file follows the race's official course GPX.
- 1,501 waypoints, each with elevation from SRTM 30 m terrain data, with the Harbour Bridge deck carried across rather than read at water level, then smoothed
- Total distance: about 42.19 km, the certified 42.195 km
- Climbing: about +339 m and −420 m (the race gives +313 m and −396 m), from 91 m at the start to 9 m at the finish
Direction: point to point. North Sydney → Harbour Bridge → the city → Pyrmont → Anzac Parade → Centennial Park → the city → Royal Botanic Garden → Opera House.
Treadmill simulation notes
Sydney is the one Major that properly works an auto-incline treadmill. It's rolling all the way, with a few short, steep pinches, and a climb near 40 km before the drop to the Opera House. Run it at an easy effort and let the hills set the work.
