A short history
The Tokyo Marathon was first run in 2007 and joined the World Marathon Majors in 2013. It's one of the hardest to get a place in, and one of the fastest: a gentle net downhill from Shinjuku to the finish by Tokyo Station.
The course starts outside the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, heads east through Iidabashi and Akihabara to Nihonbashi, then north to Asakusa and the Kaminarimon. It comes back across the Sumida River by Monzen-nakacho and Ryogoku, runs through Ginza and Hibiya to a turn at Tamachi, and finishes on Gyoko-dori in front of Tokyo Station.
About this GPX
This file follows the race's official 2026 course map.
- 1,501 waypoints, each with elevation from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan's 5 m laser-survey terrain model, smoothed so the river bridges don't read as dips
- Total distance: about 42.27 km; SummitRoom runs it as the certified 42.195 km
- Climbing: about +32 m and −67 m, from 39 m at the start to 3 m at the finish
Direction: point to point. Shinjuku → Iidabashi → Akihabara → Nihonbashi → Asakusa → Monzen-nakacho → Ryogoku → Ginza → Hibiya → Tamachi → Hibiya → Tokyo Station.
Treadmill simulation notes
Tokyo is quick: most of the drop comes in the first 5 km out of Shinjuku, so a treadmill that can't go below 0% runs the start flat and the rest almost flat. It's a good course for a long run at marathon pace, with the out-and-backs giving the second half a natural rhythm.
